Relationships are hard work. We enter into a partnership with excitement, passion, and energy. As our relationship grows we tend to encounter a number of stressful situations that find us asking- what happened to us? Why can’t things be like they were before? And, can we make this work? Many of the clients I work with share some level of confusion about how and why seemingly minor issues escalate into arguments that become so intense and/or are pushed down into silent grudges that erode the home. I work with clients to make sense of what is happening in their interactions that lead them to these outcomes - to trace, recognize, and repair their miscommunication. More importantly, we will seek to understand what it is about these seemingly minor moments that push on larger issues that, when not repaired and managed, lead to the same unfortunate outcomes. Once this pattern is recognized, couples can work to stop replicating it and develop healthier patterns of managing conflict as it arises.
I help couples facing a variety of concerns including difficulties with communication, anger, drinking, disagreements about managing in-laws or children, lack of intimacy, or trouble balancing stressful demands at the work and in the home. I approach my work without judgment or bias. I know personally how much work goes into building and maintaining a life-long relationship.
I utilize narrative, psychodynamic, and attachment-based approaches. We will work together to identify your triggers, interrupt the escalation in your arguments, and develop strategies to improve communication. We will examine how your own family background and/or relationship history may be impacting your current relationship. I will help to teach you and your partner healthier and more effective ways to communicate and will assist you in learning ways to phrase concerns so you may be heard by your partner. I welcome couples of all kinds into my office - dating, engaged, married, partnered, LGBTQ, or heterosexual. Contact me if you want to talk to me about the current issues you are facing as a couple to see if I am a good fit for your goals and needs.
