Seeking treatment for yourself or someone you love when they are struggling with addiction can feel daunting and shaming. Unfortunately, there is a tremendous amount of stigma in our society surrounding substance abuse. People wrongly assume it is a fault in a person's character that leads to addiction. People are often told that if they only tried harder they would get better.
Addiction is a real disease with real treatment and solutions to stay sober. No one causes addiction. No one plans on becoming an addict. It happens through a combination of genetics and environmental stressors, including negative and stressful life events. Social pressures, emotional triggers, and co-occurring mental health issues can perpetuate the use. I approach work with individuals and families of individuals with substance use without any judgment. Having personal experience with how addiction impacts a family, I am acutely aware of the shame that is often tied to seeking help and admitting one has a problem.
I work with teens and adults on developing a way to take back control of their lives. I help them understand how addiction works in the brain, identify their personal triggers for use, and develop a relapse prevention plan. I assist them in looking at underlying factors (such as low self-esteem, family conflict, isolation, anxiety, and depression) that could be contributing to the urge to return to using. We address these issues so that treatment for their addiction is ultimately more effective and long-lasting. I coordinate with doctors and treatment centers to help people in their recovery. I work with family members in understanding addiction, recognizing patterns that lead to enabling, and learning how to care for themselves while their loved one is struggling.
